Black Sheep Morris...

Who we are...

Blacksheep Morris is a mixed side based in Barnard Castle in the north of England and we dance mainly in the Border Tradition.  This has its origins in the English Welsh border regions of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The style is colourful, flamboyant and energetic.  As the dances were originally for begging and busking they were designed to be fun and entertaining. The style continues to evolve: traditional dances are modified and new ones developed, often after a good night out at the pub.  We can be identified by our colourful rag coats, individually decorated bowler hats and odd socks – one green, one yellow.  And yes we do all have another pair to match.

History of The Black Sheep Morris...

We were formed in the autumn of 1989 and over the years we have performed at many interesting venues from fetes and festivals to weekends of dance with other morris sides throughout the country: from Exmoor in the south, through Wales and as far north as Edinburgh.  Our travels have taken us beyond these shores to Picardy, France on several occasions and also to North Carolina, USA.

Black Sheep Morris and you....

We enjoy our dancing and hope that you will too. Whether you would like us to dance at your event or you are feeling brave and adventurous and would like to dance with us, get in touch.

We are always happy to welcome new members, both dancers and musicians, either with or without experience. Many members of the side will tell you that they initially came along apprehensive and thinking ‘what possessed me to do this’?  Within weeks they found themselves totally hooked.  So if you are a ‘closet’ Morris dancer have a go, your friends may even want to join when they hear how much fun your having.........
